Target
To design a gift for the Creative Industries Faculty to enhance their current relationships and foster new ones
Introduction
This project was split into two phases; research and product design. The report helped create a clear design direction for the ideal gift within the user demographic. It focused on tier 2 recipients, for our client, to be iconic for the Creative Industries Faculty (CIF) at Queensland University of Technology (QUT). The purpose of this project is to collect primary and secondary research in the gift giving topic to develop the ideal gift. The research provided insightful information into the gift giving culture and ritual which led to QUT Blossom. QUT Blossom was designed to represent QUT CIF to present to tier 2 recipients such as industry partners, to encourage and strength relations with QUT. It was iconic through it's form and told a story through its petals.
Re-imagined
QUT Blossom was chosen as one of the 4 winners. As such the original design was rethought for a cheaper and easier production. This meant the design had to change as the manufacturing process was to expensive.
Design Process
User research, Market and Product Analysis, iterations and model making
From the User Research report, it was apparent emerging key design opportunities lay within the usability and symbolic functions of the gift. These key findings focused on products that would be useful to their work environment. The design process explored and focused on creating products of meaning, representations of CIF and QUT. This led to Gardens Point campus, and the botanical gardens right next door. Through trial and error I was able to replicate an Australian flower and make it functional. Iconic to QUT.
Final Outcome
Finished Details and Packaging
QUT Blossom is a multisensory experience that is a combination of a stationery product through the petal post-it-notes and an inspiring or motivating product. The design was re-created to be thought-provoking and have multiple usages. It's through the material of QUT Blossom, with its malleable capacity that QUT blossom is able to be flexible. It's designed for users to play and interact in order to create a design. It was to reflect what CIF stood for and the schools that it included; fine arts, design and communication.
